Old Tucson has been part of Southern Arizona’s identity for generations — from legendary Western films and John Wayne to stunt shows, Nightfall, concerts and family memories.
On this episode of The Upside, Edmund Marquez sits down with Rob Loebl of Hollywood of the Desert to talk about his vision for the future of Old Tucson and the effort to bring new energy to this historic film location.
Rob shares his personal connection to Old Tucson, memories of founder Bob Shelton, and his plans to make the property a year-round destination. The conversation covers bringing filmmaking back to the studio, working with independent filmmakers, restoring historic structures, creating educational programs and summer camps, returning horseback riding and rodeos, hosting concerts and special events, and reconnecting Old Tucson with the Tucson community.
They also discuss the 1995 fire, the legacy of the original film sets, and what it will take to turn Bob Shelton’s dream into a new generation of experiences for Tucson families, filmmakers and visitors.
Can Old Tucson once again become one of Southern Arizona’s signature destinations?
